FORUM

January 2008

Greetings Runners, This eNewsletter is a compilation of items of interest to the local running community;  local race information, accomplishments, and anecdotes from the Annapolis running ‘family’.   If you did not get the previous issues  add admin@runannapolis.com to your Contacts List.  Check your Spam Folder for our initial issue –or- go to RunAnnapolis.com and scroll to the bottom of the left panel and click on Newsletter.

As with Strider Stuff, your inputs are what makes this more than another advertisement.  It will not necessarily be sent every week but when enough content is available to warrant taking up your time to read.  I will also be as timely as possible with upcoming races and results; so if you have an event  or announcement that would be of interest to over 2000  and growing local runners and triathletes – send it in.    If there is a particular section you would like to see, like a ‘Local Runner Highlight’ or an ‘Upcoming Training Programs’  let me know.  Read on.

LOCAL NEWS:

-Our Running Community family is mourning the passing of one of the icons of local running.  As you have probably heard from the article in the Capital or my email broadcast, Ben Moore passed away last week at the age of 82.  In the early 80's a group of 15 local women decided they wanted to do the Marine Corps Marathon.  Marathons were just beginning to get a foothold in the running community and it seemed like a worthy challenge.  They "enlisted" Ben to train them - and a legacy was born.   That group of women all successfully completed that first marathon and many went on to do many more, and even 'step up' to doing the JFK 50.  After that first year, the group grew, and Ben kept teaching the "Long Slow Distance" approach to completing your first marathon.   Many hundreds of runners have successfully completed their first marathon because of the program he started.  His program and philosophy continues today.

Some of us 'old-timers' that went through Ben's "Moore's Marine's" prorgram think it would be a fitting memorial to return to the place we shared so many memories while training with Ben.  The "Ben Moore Memorial Run" would be Saturday 19 January, from behind the Conte Building on Defense Highway (just like the old days) starting at 7:30 a.m.  and going out the old route out Defense Highway - no minimum distance :-)  We will provide coffee and bagels to go with sharing anecdotes and memories after the run.   This will be a totally unofficial, non-waiver gathering of 'friends of Ben'.

It will also be an opportunity to come up with suggestions for a permanent memorial to encourage the Annapolis Striders Board to use some of the $350,000 in Club accounts.

-FLEET FEET ANNAPOLIS to host ZOOMA Women's HALF Marathon and 10K Training Program

Are you a new runner with a goal of completing your first Half Marathon, or runner looking to develop  half marathon training performance? Or runners who would like to become more active, increase their energy level and boost their self-confidence?  Fleet Feet Sports Annapolis is offering the “Zooma Race Series” half marathon training program to help runners get ready for the inaugural Zooma Race scheduled for 01 June, 2008. Fleet Feet Sports in conjunction with RunAnnapolis.com will provide this 14-week training program for runners hoping to run or walk their first half marathon race.  The purpose of the program is to help runners or walkers the ability to safely and comfortably complete their first half marathon or improve on their past performances at the half marathon distance. It is also oriented to help participants enjoy their fitness activities of running and walking and to encourage them to live healthier lifestyles.  The program will begin on 1 March.  Stay tuned for details on Registration and program details. -Maximal aerobic capacity or VO2 Max, the amount of oxygen consumed in one minute of maximal aerobic exercise, is widely considered the standard test for aerobic conditioning.  Improving VO2 Max is a crucial step in maximizing endurance performance in any event lasting four minutes or longer.  The higher an athlete’s VO2 Max, the greater the contribution of the aerobic system to energy production.  This translates into greater endurance at any intensity.  http://www.fitness-concepts.com/CoachesCorner/June05.pdf

SSign up now to get custom Annapolis Triathlon Club license plates!  We have our artwork ready and will soon be submitting the paperwork to MVA for approval.  We need at least 25 interested members to get started.  The cost of the custom license plates will be a *one-time* fee of $25.  (the fee does not recur every year like regular personalized plates)  We will have the IronCrab logo, the letters ATC on the side, "Annapolis Triathlon Club" written along the bottom, and a 4-digit number in the middle.  These are going to be great!  Note:  Be advised that these license plates replace your existing ones.  So, if you have personalized tags already, they will be replaced with the custom ATC tags.  If you are interested in getting your very own club license plates, this is what I need from you for now:

 1. Your full name

 2. Your current tag number (must be Maryland tags)

Once we are approved and I receive the individual sign-up forms from MVA, we can either connect at a club social or individually to get the forms and funds taken care of.  Please send your name and tag number to my email address:  jeff@jeffcarlson.net

RUNNING HUMOR:

You know you're a runner when you measure distances in units of 'marathons'.
You know you're a runner when you measure time in units of miles or kilometers.
You know you're a runner when you eat so you can run.
You know you're a runner when you 'hydrate' instead of 'drink'.
You know you're a runner when you use the word 'only' when talking about runs of 10K and longer.
You know you're a runner when the term
'The Wall' means something that happens after about 20 miles of running, and not something out of Pink Floyd.
You know you're a runner when you know (and care) who Pheidippides was, and can spell it correctly. In any of its variations

“It is a pity for a person to grow old and never know the strength and endurance of which the human body is capable.” - Socrates
